Just watched Kanako and Akiko in practice.

Kanako: Was very confident throughout. Warmed up slowly, landed 3F. Music was played second. In her SP, "Prayer for Taylor", she started with delicate choreography. Singled her 2A, confident with 3T-3T combo, spin, 3F with flow and choreopraphy on the exit, then spin combo. I found the music engaging at first, but for the most part felt too slow to make for an exciting program. Kanako herself was lively but the effect was muted somewhat by the choice of music. Following her music, she executed outstanding 3Z, 3L and 3F. Her closing 2A was very high with good flow and choreography out. Finished with an energetic spin combo.

Akiko: Not quite as successful as Kanako in the warm-up. Started in immediately with jumps: 3F, 3T and 3T-3T. Her music was played in third position. "Kill Bill" was entertaining and energetic and quoted "Flight of the Bumblebee" and "Malaguena". 3T-3T (slightly off-balance on second jump), 3Z (doubled and stepped out of it, then laughed cutely in the direction of her coach), hydrobladed to a spin (which was very slow). Landed a rather shaky 2A, but finished with an exciting spin combo. Following her music, she performed successful 3Zs, but had tight landings on the 3L and 3F. Performed a two-footed 2A-3T, then a clean 2A-3T, singled a 3F, then landed the 3F very well. Later did a 3F-2L-2L. Also practiced a spiral and her spin combo.

The ladies looked quite good, especially Kanako. Will report on the men later in the day.

Kanako、Akiko

Flight of the Bumblebee"と"Malaguena"が使われています。

Just watched the mens practice. Takahito skated second. He doubled his 4T attempt, then landed his 3A but was low and turned out a bit at the end. His 3Z-3T was right on! Jumps were loaded at beginning of program. Then performed spin, footwork and combination spin. After his turn, he doubled a few jumps, did a 3F-2T, then landed his 4T-3T but underrotated the second jump. Afterwards, spent a lot of time on boards talking to coach. Skated to Malaguena... to me, it's a little overused but he had energy. Looking forward to "Shogun" free skate!

Nobunari was third to skate. Had fallen on a 3F attempt earlier. Spent a lot of time on boards talking to Lee. Skated his "New Moon" music... great choice... really built to a climax at end. Landed 4T-3T combo, but dangerously close to boards. 3A may have been doubled (media section is far from where he landed it).... then 3F. Spin. Stopped to relace his skates. Footwork, then combo spin. Later landed a huge 3A-3T.... amazing! Toward end of session, he slipped awkwardly while skating to boards to talk to coach and grabbed his back. He seemed OK later and coach was unconcerned.

Neither Nobu nor Takahito could practice too many more jumps because Elladj Balde and Patrick Chan both practiced their entire routines.

Patrick Chan rehearsed his free skate. Landed 4T-3T (after missing it all through practice), fell on 4T, landed 3Z. Fell on 3A, made 3L, 3Z-2T close to boards.... 3F-steps-3L was a little shaky on second jump. Put a hand down on his final 2A.

More to come tomorrow... Ladies practice at 8:30 am and Ladies SP at 2:00 pm. Stay tuned!

Hello skating fans! Just watched the Friday practices. Both ladies looked good!

Kanako's music was second to last. She wore a lovely, long, mint green dress for her program to "Prayer for Taylor". Liked the program but still didn't care for the music except for the beginning. Kanako singled her opening 2A, then nailed her 3T-3T. She then rested, then landed her 3F after a long pause (I thought she was going to abandon the jump). Finished with her spin combo. Kanako had a very mature look and moved beautifully, but I wish she could smile more, even with such stately music. We'll look for her facial expression in the performance today.

Akiko was in a sleek silver and black dress, appropriate for the feel of the music. Her first jump in warmup was a brilliant 3T-3T, followed by 3Z and 2A (same as in her program). Her music played last. She landed her 3T-3T combo (landed but not very big), then her 3Z. Spin, then 2A which was off-centre in the air but successfully landed. Then her always-peppy footwork and her final spin. Immediately after the program, she bowed and went to leave the ice, but coach had her change her mind. She repeated her combination spin and then nailed the 2A, which was shaky in practice. Very quirky music and matching choreography. I very much enjoyed it.

Both ladies looked very good and we're hoping for big things in the SP. I will be in the mixed zone to talk to both ladies immediately following their programs.

Kanako: StSq, 2A, FSSp, 3T-3T, CCoSp, 3F, LSp
Akiko: 3T-3T, 3Lz, FCSp, LSp, 2A, StSq, CCoSp

Just watched the Mens SP practice.

Takahito was debonair in his black, gold and red matador-style costume. He stumbled early on the opening footwork, and then did not recover in time to land the opening jump... also very close to the boards. He recovered very well for his 3A, which was excellent, followed by spin, 3Z, steps and final spin combo. Later he nailed the 3Z-3T, 3T and 3A. Was not particularly expressive.

Nobunari basically just walked through his program... singling all three jumps/combos - 4T, 3A and 3F. then did steps and spin. Later on in the warmup, he nailed the 3A and triple combination. Hoping for the best tonight... looked good at the very end of the warm-up time. Interesting colours: light and dark teal, and white.

Will post planned program later this afternoon.

The ladies skated well today! Kanako two-footed her 3F but was otherwise clean. Such an elegant presence! She did not interview in the Mixed Zone afterwards.

Akiko's 3T-3T was downgraded to 3T-2T and that cost her several points. She was also low on the landing of the 3Z. Still, her score seemed low to me. We talked to her in the Mixed Zone afterwards and I will post her comments.

Japan Skates talked briefly with Akiko in the Mixed Zone.

About her downgraded 3T-3T:
"I knew that I didn't have the speed necessary to land the second triple, but wanted to go for the triple-triple anyway. So the jump was downgraded."

About the rest of the program:
"I was happy with it. I was pleased with the rest of the elements."
