Our Japanese correspondent, Aiko Shimazu, reports from the National Winter Sports Championships in Aomori, Japan.

This is her Ladies SP report.

---

Akiko and Fumie, were surprisingly headlining in National Winter Sports Championships in Aomori.

Ladies SP

1st Akiko SUZUKI 63.18 TES33.46 PCS29.72

2nd Fumie SUGURI 54.56 TES26.48 PCS28.08

Akiko shined to be placed 1st. {3F(e)-2T, 3Lz, FCSp4, LSp4, 2A, CCoSp4, SlSt3} Her jumps, much improved since she was edged to drop from All-Japan(Japan Nats) podium. Rotations regained so fast as her usual one. A ballroom-tasted 2A she connected with the difficult backward entry, exited with steps, and the challenging one-handed Biellmann spin of Layback she executed well-done - if it were Japan Nats! "just 70% I showed," Akiko shined the crowds a hundred percent, who wanted to see the figure "star" skater, then they got satisfied to be warm in a snowy day.

Fumie, {3Lz(e)-2T, 1F, FSSP4, 2A, LSp3, SlSt3, CCoSp4} despite popped Flip, she hit every single musical note! So intense, so pure, The Contemporary Dance she showed! in an abstract style as her signature way. As a program, it must be the better one than her excellent Japan Nats in Dec. She had been struggling with 2A in warming-up 6 minutes, but she killed it! That's Fumie as you know. She was placed 2nd comfortably.

Mutsumi TAKAYAMA, a champ of University Championships in Jan, placed 3rd(53.70 TES28.82 PCS24.8Cool, Aki SAWADA, just 2 competitions to go, popped 2A and popped her smile, placed 5th(45.72 TES23.96 PCS21.76), 4th place Rumi SUIZU (46.66 TES25.46 PCS21.20), a 2007 Junior Japan Nats champion, recovered from unqualified Japan Nats. & there are a lot of artistic girls! They are not familiar, not great jumpers, not seen at Japan Nats, but polish themselves. Unique Spin positions, cool moves, their own dress-up and make-up, the girls skate with heart and fun. Love their lives.

Aiko's Ladies FS report!

Ladies FS

Akiko SUZUKI overall 185.88 1st place

122.70 TES62.38 PCS60.32

{3Lz, 2A-3T, 3Lo FCCoSp4 ChSp1 // 3Lz(e)-1Lo-2S, 3F, 3Lo<, 3S, FCSp4, SlSt2, CCoSp3}

Akiko had 2 Lutz again! as she had intended in the summer. She easily killed quality 2A-3T, and displayed "5 types x 7 times triples" for the first time this season. Two-footed 3Lo is queer, but interesting 3Lz-1Lo-2S, 2 ways to understand: (1) she stepped out - that means 1Lo and secured with 2S; (2) she planned 3Lz-1Lo-3S! and would settle 2A as the last jump. ...In warming-up 6 minutes she made 3Lz-2t-2Lo combo at that place, though. "elements got sustainable, then emotions' gonna able to be handled to dance," so "80%-charged" Akiko had fully-charged Misawa Ice Arena in her way. Much musically FCCoSp on the song "Miracle of Miracles", for example. And all of us or herself was eager for "To Life" SlSt!

Fumie SUGURI overall 157.67 2nd place

103.01 TES46.15 PCS56.96

{3Lz(e)-2T, 3F, 3S, FCCoSp3, ChSp1 // 3Lz<(e), 3T<, 1F, 2A, FSSp3, SlSt3, CCoSp3}

First of all, she will continue to compete!!! next season. "will work on artistry, also on jumps, which need more consistency." In the 1st half, solid 3 jumps including 3S(her weak jump), she made her groove. 2nd half, jumps got imperfect, but "I have closed such a terrible season not so terribly," her groove went on to the finish. …At her best seasons, much many fans got involved in her groove. Fumie was such a skater. Today we've done again!

Figure Skating FS is the toughest sport ever, do you agree? The girls struggled and struggled… Rumi, 3rd place of FS, set herself in 3rd place overall. Mutsumi 4th, and Aki 7th.
